Using Templates & Source Documents

Drafting from the Template Library

Under House-style templates, you can publish your firm's standard Word or PDF documents (via Library → Templates). Once added, these show up both here on the landing page and inside the drafting box itself (as the From Library option under Output template), so every new draft automatically follows your firm's usual formatting and structure instead of a generic layout.

Uploading Your Own Template

If your firm hasn't published a house-style template for what you're drafting, or you just need to match one specific document, use Upload a file under Output template to mirror the structure of a document you provide on the spot, without needing it added to the firm-wide Library first.

Referencing Source Documents

Click Input Document to bring in material Draft should base the document on:

• From your device: Upload a reference file straight from your computer.
• From this matter: Pick documents already saved to the matter you're working in, without re-uploading them. You'll see each document's type, name, size, and status, and only documents marked Indexed can actually be used; anything still being prepared isn't selectable yet.
• Entire matter documents: Draft using input from everything filed under that matter at once.
• Save files for reuse: Keeps whatever you upload stored in the matter's Documents, so it's available again later.

Selecting Supporting Research

Turning on Research before drafting means Draft won't just generate text on its own, it backs up what it writes with real sources, so the result comes back citation-backed. You choose what to search:

• Database tab: Search the legal database for authoritative law sources with citations, narrowed by country, law group, and act if you want to be specific.

• Org Knowledge base tab: Ground the draft in your firm's own uploaded documents instead of (or alongside) public sources.

This is the same idea as ASK's source selection, just applied to writing a new document rather than answering a question.

Using Matters as Context

Between Entire matter documents (for input material) and From this matter (for picking specific files), a matter effectively becomes a pool of context Draft can pull from without you re-uploading anything each time. This is especially useful when you're drafting several related documents for the same matter, like a reply to a notice followed by a supporting affidavit, since both can draw on the same underlying set of matter documents.
