Lexlegis.ai Draft allows you to create legal documents quickly and flexibly, either from predefined templates or entirely from scratch using your own instructions.
Use Draft when the objective is to produce a structured legal document such as a contract, notice, reply, or memorandum, rather than to research or analyse information.
This guide covers the Draft workflow end to end, from initial setup to generating a complete first draft.
Before You Begin
Before starting a draft, ensure that:
- You are clear on the type of document you want to create
- Any reference documents, clauses, or rulebooks you want to use are available in your Library
- You know whether the draft is proactive or in response to an existing document or situation
Draft uses only the information and materials you explicitly select during setup.
To understand how drafting resources are stored and organised, see Understanding the Library in Lexlegis.
1. Selecting a Template or Starting from Scratch
Begin by choosing how you want to structure your draft.
You can:
- Select a predefined template from the Templates section
- Create your own format by selecting Make your own
Templates provide a standard legal structure, while starting from scratch allows full customisation of the document format.
To understand how document structure is defined, see Choosing a Template to Start Drafting.
2. Indicating Whether the Draft Is Reactive or Proactive
Next, specify whether the draft is being created in response to something.
- Reactive drafts are used when responding to an existing document or situation
- Proactive drafts are used for original document creation
This selection helps Lexlegis frame the draft appropriately.
For guidance on drafting in response to existing material, see Drafting in Response to Something (Reactive vs Proactive)
3. Selecting Documents for Data Extraction
Select the documents or text from which facts, clauses, or contextual information should be extracted.
You can:
- Select files from your Library
- Add new documents if required
- Provide custom reference text instead of files
Only the selected materials are used to extract information for the draft.
To understand how reference documents are used during drafting, see Selecting Documents for Data Extraction.
4. Selecting Clauses or Sections to Include
Specify whether particular clauses or paragraphs must be included in the draft.
You can:
- Select clauses from an existing Clause Library
- Provide your own clause text or instructions
This ensures that mandatory, standard, or negotiated provisions are incorporated correctly.
For controlling mandatory provisions in a draft, see Including Specific Clauses or Paragraphs in a Draft.
5. Applying a Master Draft Rulebook
If applicable, select a Master Draft Rulebook.
Rulebooks define drafting standards such as:
- Mandatory inclusions
- Stylistic preferences
- Structural constraints
- Internal or jurisdiction-specific rules
Applying a rulebook helps maintain consistency and compliance across documents.
To apply internal drafting standards and policies, see Using Master AI Guidelines in Drafting.
6. Providing Additional Instructions
Use the additional instructions field to include any guidance that may assist with accurate drafting.
This may include:
- Tone or writing style
- Jurisdiction-specific considerations
- Audience or purpose
- Context not covered by earlier steps
These instructions refine how the draft is generated.
7. Reviewing Extracted Information
Before generating the draft, Lexlegis presents a Review Extracted Information step.
This step displays key data points inferred from your inputs, such as:
- Party names and details
- Effective date and term
- Governing law and dispute resolution
- Purpose and obligations
- Signatory information
If any information cannot be automatically extracted, it is clearly flagged for manual entry.
Reviewing and completing this information ensures accuracy before generation.
For refining tone, audience, and formatting, see Adding Special Instructions to a Draft.
8. Generating the Draft
Once the extracted information has been reviewed and confirmed, select Generate Draft.
Lexlegis generates the document using:
- The selected template or custom structure
- Reference documents and extracted data
- Selected clauses and rulebooks
- Additional drafting instructions
A complete first draft is then created and ready for review and refinement.
To see how generated drafts can be reviewed, edited, and validated, see Understanding the Draft Result Page.
9. When to Use Draft
Draft is suited for workflows such as:
- Creating contracts and agreements
- Replying to legal notices, motions, or orders
- Drafting documents using predefined templates or internal standards
- Producing first-instance drafts ready for review
